Public Notice: Djungan People – Native Title Holders Authorisation Meeting

ESJ Law Pty Ltd is convening a meeting for all Native Title Holders of the Djungan People.

The meeting is being convened on the instruction of Judulu (Colin Neal). And it has the endorsement of the Nguddaboolgan RNTBC.

The purpose of the meeting is to consider whether to authorise a compensation claim for the loss of or damage to native title rights and interests of Djungan People over the land and waters depicted in the map below (Compensation Claim Area).

Who should attend?

All descendants of the following Apical Ancestors, as determined by the Federal Court of Australia in Archer on behalf of the Djungan People #1 v State of Queensland [2012] FCA 801 (Native Title Holders), are invited to attend the meeting:

a) Tommy and Topsy Wason;

b) John Wason;

c) Dinah [Richards];

d) Jessie Wason;

e) Jack O’Neil and his spouse, Flora Richards;

f) Peter Ray Burns;

g) Jimmy Kingsburra and Lizzie Kingsburra (including the descendants of Joe Sands);

h) Charles James Archer (Senior); i) Lucy [Burns];

j) Pluto [Brumby];

k) Mollie and her spouse, Bert Gordon; and

l) Mick Richards.

Registrants for the authorisation meeting will be required to demonstrate descendancy from one of the above-named Apical Ancestors in order to be permitted to attend and vote at the meeting.

Authorisation Meeting

This notice invites all Native Title Holders as described above to the authorisation meeting, to be held at the following location:

Date: Friday 30 October 2020
Time: 9:00am – 2:00pm
Venue: Pullman Cairns International at 17 Abbott Street Cairns City QLD 4870

All attendees must register for attendance by no later than 5:00pm on 16 October 2020

The Agenda:

a) Acknowledgement of Country;

b) Discuss background to a Compensation Claim;

c) Confirm the decision-making process to be followed at the authorisation meetings and in the future by the Compensation Claim Group;

d) Consider and authorise a Compensation Claim within the Claim Area;

e) Authorise the Lead Applicant/s to act on behalf of the Compensation Claim Group and to bring the compensation application and to deal with all matters arising from that claim.

f) Authorise the Lead Applicant/s to request and receive any and all cultural, genealogical, historical and all other material relating to Djungan People and their Native Title Rights and Interests, on behalf of the Djungan Native Title Holders.

g) Decide on the support and restrictions on the named Lead Applicant in performance of their duty and consideration of any conditions to be imposed on the powers of the named applicant/s;

h) Confirm ESJ Law Pty Ltd as the legal representatives of the Compensation Claim Group.

Description: The proposed application area covers approximately 1,838 sq km, consisting of numerous land parcels; located within a radius of about 40 km of Mount Mulligan.

Relevant LGA: Mareeba Shire Council.
